In the 1950s and 1960s, Sheffield and his musicians were playing mostly in clubs and for social club dances. In the photograph above, the Leslie Sheffield Band plays at Louie’s 29 Club, a popular establishment located on Southwest Twenty-ninth Street near May Avenue. Louie’s 29 Club was one of a few places that featured a complete show, from time to time, with music, dance, and some comedy. Leslie Sheffield is seen to the left on the piano. Sheffield and his men, like so many others during those times, dressed professionally, unlike generations that followed. Leslie Sheffield, seen at right smiling, died in Oklahoma City in 1979, leaving his wife, Eula, and three children, Leslie Jr., Debra, and Ellen, who became a well-known pianist and organist in Oklahoma City and Los Angeles.
